With paper collage as technique and expression, the works of Iben Toft Nørgård concurrently appear menacing and seductive.  In an original use of materials and structures, the works presents a thorough prepared detail-richness open to interpretation.

ERUPTING FLOWERS 2017 – selected works:

EVOLUTION IN BLOOM 2017

ERUPTING FLOWERS 2016

‘Erupting Flowers’ is the result of studies on Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland, more specifically Heimaey where I made geological research and tried to learn about, or rather imagined how plant life could have evolved after the violent eruptions from the ‘Eldfell’ volcano in 1973. The flowers in the work are cut and created entirely from illustrations of animals.

The Butterfly Effect 2015

Insecta De Regno Vegetabili, 2015

INSECTA BOTANICA

BIOLOGICAL BONDING

The main spectacle in the exhibition is the new work ”Biological Bonding”, from which the exhibition also lends its name, and it is skillfully created for this occassion. Iben Toft Nørgård has spent hours patiently exploring possible new lifeforms: spawned from flora, shaped like insects and collected for this exhibition. One can only wonder where these odd creatures come from and which peculiar world they do inhabit?

Iben ToftNørgård draws her inspiration from nature’s ability to adapt, as well as thesomewhat concerning possibilities which exists in the scientist’s lab.

”Collage is quite easy to get started with – but it’s extremely complicated to find different pictures of the same color tone. Or to get the light to fall uniformly on a subject that is composed of parts from many sources. The overall work must appear so seamless that the viewer experience my manipulations as convincingly real, just as if it was a photo of a motif that actually exists.” Iben Toft Nørgård

THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT

The material that this work is based upon is predominantly from the Flora Danica illustrations drawn in the period 1761-1883. Among the panels in Flora Danica 64 were chosen, that reproduces the wild plants that are usually recognized as a weed in today’s gardens. These were included in the book ‘Garden Weeds’ (1974), where the vast majority of cuttings for ‘The Butterfly Effect’ are sourced. They are supplemented with a few more exotic elements like illustration of a cactus from the book “Biological Research’ (1974).

The title is taken from Edward Lorenz’s chaos theory developed in 1961. “Predictability: Does the Flab of a Butterfly’s Wings in Brazil Set Off a Tornado in Texas?” Popularly known as ‘The Butterfly Effect’ it is the notion that a butterfly’s wings from one side of the world can cause a hurricane on the other side because of the sensitive dependency of initial conditions in a given dynamical system. The choice of the material as well as the title suggests that everything is connected and mutually dependent and as such affects all things in complex ways and with unpredictable results.
